5th Day Of Christmas Contest

On the 5th day of Christmas, Shanghai gave to us even more smog…. and a pigeon on a Pearl TV Tower. Bleh. Fortunately, we’re a little more generous so we’re giving away a 1000 rmb voucher for the awesome online grocery store Fields http://www.fieldschina.com/en/index.html . To enter, simply tell us “What is your ultimate Christmas dinner like?

  1. My ideal Christmas dinner consists mostly of roast lamb and roast vegetables (potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots), followed by a heavily topped pavlova and a cheese board.

In saying this, one of the best things I’ve eaten in Shanghai was a roast ham from Field’s for Thanksgiving last year. Not to suck up or anything, but that thing was amazing. If only I had about 1000RMB to spend on one. My friends would love me.

  2. Mulled wine to started!
    Crudite.
    Cured meats and cheeses.
Copious amounts of good red wine.
    Prime rib + horseradish sauce.
Stewed greens (kale/collard/chard/etc.) with ham hock and vinegar!
Butternut squash with shallots and sage.
    Garlic mashed potatoes.
Fernet to make room for dessert.
And a spread of Christmas cookies with: Mexican wedding cookies, amaretti, pfeffernüsse, gingerbread thins, zimtsterne, etc.
And some good coffee to finish it off.

  3. Last year we had one of those ultimate Christmas dinners: roast chicken and all the trimmings (plus pumpkin pie) delivered hot to our door from Fields. We got to share our meal with our new neighbors/friends and it made us feel right at home after just moving here a couple short months before. But, yet, better than home because no cooking and very little mess to clean up!

Just like our dinner last year, any ultimate holiday dinner is having a taste of home that reminds you of special memories and sharing it with good company.

  4. Ideal Christmas dinner is with my whole family. Christmas music playing in the background. Great conversation. Fireplace burning.

Oh, you probably want to know all about the food.

Christmas dinner should always be about the basics. Don’t get too crazy with it. No one wants to show up to Christmas dinner and try experimental recipes. Just regular turkey with mashed potatoes, carrots, yams, brussel sprouts, stuffing.

Christmas is about all that wonderful traditional food, and spending it with those you care about.

  5. It’s the only day of the year where anything goes and your mum cant tell you off so I’d have Ferraro rocher as canapés, cornflakes with Baileys as a starter, egg nog as an amous bouch, smoked salmon with vodka as a fish course, a big fat turkey with all the trimmings for main naturally then a duty free sized bar of Toblerone for dessert before finishing off the liquor that only gets used at Christmas and bought during a time when you used to go to France for a day trip to avoid paying the tax. If you hit the Midori as last resort you know it’s been a good day. That, is Christmas in a nutshell round my house.

  6. My ultimate, over-the-top, yummy yummy Christmas dinner consists of fabulous homey food and friends around the table to share it with. Since I’m north-european mashed potatoes and blood sausages with cranberry sauce are a must, healthy steamed vegetables in large quantities, pumpkin soup, potato and fresh salads. Plus the usual herring with sour cream on a slice of black bread. Chocolate brownies, gingerbread cookies with icing on top, banana bread and ‘swiss’ roll with raspberries to end the feast with. Oh, and glass of glögg (aka mulled wine) wouldn’t hurt.:)

  7. It’s the Christmas Eve. Eating Chinese BBQ and lots of strawberries, while skyping with my family back home (just enough distance to feel close, but not overly intrusive). They are jealous of strawberries in winter, i’m jealous of all home-cooked meals. That’s the first Chritmas dinner I had in Shanghai, and it was awesome.

  8. 1 – Fried Turkey. If you haven’t had it, stop what you’re doing right now and get on it! Along with Honey baked ham!
2 – Every side dish imaginable – Cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes, candied yams, green bean casserole, baked macaroni and cheese, all topped with giblet gravy!
3 – Snacks – deli breads, cured meats, pickles, cheeses, stuffed jalapeños, devilled eggs
    4 – Mulled spiced wine/cider

  9. My *ultimate* Christmas dinner would be a Cornish game hen inside a duck inside a turkey inside a pig inside a sheep inside a cow. I’m calling it a Beelamporturducken. With all the trimmings, obviously.

But hey, I’m happy settling for a roast turkey dinner with my family, most of whom I haven’t seen in 2 years. That’ll do just fine. Followed by Christmas carols around the piano, a few bottles of wine, and chatting with the people I love.

Preferably somewhere where I’m not afraid to breathe without respiratory aids and can see further than 10 feet in front of me.

  10. Ultimately I like to keep it simple and “cold”:

    1) French Oysters on the half Shell with Shallotte Vinaigrette
    2) Russian Caviar, Blinis and Sour cream
    3) Lobster and homemade mayo
    4) Foie Gras terrine (made by mum)
    5) Champagne to go with all of the above

  11. Random name selector chooses……. Wendy! Wow, now you just have to spend all that fields cash on ham for your friends! Check your email box!
