We sure do love our pandas here in China. That’s why this news story was such a big deal! This was the first time that an albino panda had been spotted on camera in the wild. Researchers caught this glimpse in the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan province.

 Scientists Release First Image of Black Hole

Ok, so we thought a photo of a black hole had already been posted on Facebook –  but apparently that doesn’t count. What does count is this image – it displays a black hole in Messier 87, a large galaxy that exists 55 million light years from Earth. Space blows our minds when we think about it. Think there’s anything good to eat in that quadrant of the universe?

 The British Royal Family Takes up Instagram

 Female Imams Lead Prayer Service in France

In an effort to build a more inclusive and modern version of Islam, Eva Janadin and Anne-Sophie Monsinay led prayers in front of a congregation in France. This was the first time that women led services in France. Unfortunately, the service had to be held in a secret location for security reasons, but hopefully one day gender won’t matter in occasions like this.

 Researchers Eliminate H.I.V. from Mice

American researchers treated mice with antiretroviral drugs and then used the Crispr gene editing tool to remove any leftover traces of H.I.V. from the DNA of the mice. Altogether, they completely eliminated H.I.V. from a third of the cases. This marks a promising step towards a cure for humanity.

Did you know that the Earth actually has two north poles? We have a geographic and a magnetic north. Usually compasses point to the magnetic north, which can change because of the Earth’s magnetic liquid core, but the two poles aligned perfectly in Greenwich, England this year!

 New Dinosaur Species Discovered

Not only one, but two new dinosaur species were discovered in 2019. Researchers found a new type of duck-billed dinosaur in Hokkaido while a flying dinosaur with the wingspan of a small airplane was unearthed in Canada.
