We’re keeping it casual this week and as the Sherpa’s team has consumed nothing but pizza for the last week in celebration of Pizza Fest, we took a little break to eat some burgers at Anna’s Bistro.

anna1

If you’re looking for a chilled (AC and relaxed) restaurant that cooks up some homestyle favourites without artificial ingredients then this is a great spot. As well as some good coffee and craft beers to guzzle down their burgers are the real favourites, and with a whopping 21 burgers to choose from we were spoilt for choice.

Spicy Chicken & Beef Double Cheeseburger

anna2

If you really can’t decide between a beef burger, cheeseburger, or chicken burger then fear not, Anna’s Bistro has the answer. This succulent monster is stacked with a beef patty, spicy chicken, two slices of cheddar cheese, tomato, rocket, mayo and ketchup. It’s a burger for the champs and it really is as good as it looks.

Grilled Chicken Hawaiian Burger

anna3

Ok we get it, pineapple shouldn’t be on pizza (discuss), but have you ever tried it in a burger? Nothing says summer like a succulent grilled chicken breast with a juicy slab of fresh pineapple. Top it off with smoked gouda cheese, bacon, coleslaw, mayo, ketchup and an optional helping of happiness. If you’re on the bench about pineapple in a meal, then this burger should settle things for good.

BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger

anna4

Some people prefer not to experiment when it comes to burgers and that’s fair enough because this classic array of layers is famous for a reason. Take one beef patty, smoked gouda cheese, bacon, tomato, rocket, bbq sauce, mayo, and ketchup and you’ve got yourself one great burger. You’re remarkable and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

Mint Lamb Cheeseburger

anna5

If however, you do like to be a bit different then we should applaud that in a world of sheep, or in this case lamb. It’s a lamb patty with cheddar cheese, mint gravy, tomato, and lettuce. Fresh tasting and a bit lighter than the beef burgers but just as delicious.

If you love a mouthful but without the meat then Anna’s Bistro also has a choice of fish burgers and vegetarian burgers. But, if burgers are really not your thing then their menu also has some home comfort pub grub like fish and chips, roast duck, or sirloin steak.

Looking at the weather forecast for the coming week you’d think summer is already in full swing, but you’ve still got plenty of time to plan that summer vacation and beat the scorching heat that will inevitably hit us in a couple of months. Everyone has their own reasons to travel, some for nature, others for the activities, but as a big bunch of foodies, our numero uno reason for travelling is the eating!

We always knew that limiting this to just a few cities would be tough but we’ve tried our best and listed six of the best food cities around the world for you to plan your next food-venture abroad.

London

When you think of Britain, ‘amazing food’ probably doesn’t spring to mind but if you know where to look then you’re in for a scrumptious surprise. Borough Market stalls vend everything from freshly caught fish to artisanal cheeses and baked goods or tuck into some traditional fare such as fish and chips or a full English breakfast at one of London’s traditional pubs or cafes. Still not a fan of British cuisine? Take a trip to Brick Lane for some of the best curries outside of India, or try your way through the 69 Michelin starred restaurants scattered across the city.

Tokyo

Not only is the early morning fish markets enough to get the belly rumble going but with over 160,000 restaurants throughout Tokyo, it’s a foodies paradise. As well as being able to tuck into some incredible local cuisine including Unagi (eel) at Obana restaurant, there are hundreds of great international cuisines to enjoy at Michelin starred French, Spanish and Italian restaurants.

New York

Apart from enjoying a classic Rueben sandwich at the world-famous Katz’s Delicatessen, New York is a city of global tastes. Take a trip to Manhattan’s Murray Hill for some authentic curries or grab a slice of The Classic at Dom DeMarco’s pizza joint, Di Fara Pizza. If you’re looking for something a bit more rustic and late night then New York offers a variety of cheap eats through the form of food carts parked across the city.

Shanghai

In case work or other commitments require you to stay in the middle Kingdom throughout the summer then Shanghai has more to offer than the rest of the country combined. The addictive soup filled xiao long bao dumplings are not to be missed, and if you’re taking a morning stroll stay alert for the streetside jian bings, the classic version filled with egg, bean curd paste, chili sauce, coriander and a crispy wafer is going to be a great start to the day. In case you want a break from all the Chinese cuisines Shanghai has to offer, there’s plenty of fantastic western restaurants that are tough to compete with.

Bangkok

With a bearable plane journey of fewer than 5 hours from Shanghai, Bangkok is famous for its street foods such as the famous pad thai (stir-fried noodles) or som tam (spicy green papaya salad) making it a cheap eats galore for any foodie on a budget. If you’ve got a bit more time and money to spend then get a seat at Nahm where chef Pim Techamuanvivit puts a modern twist on some classic Thai dishes.

Rome

Some might say France is the capital of great food but Italy has always been a foodie favourite when it comes to amazing eats. Head to the epic Testaccio Market in Rome where you can have a culinary journey of prepared foods representing the whole of Italy. If it’s a hearty roman meal you’re after then head to the 19th Century archetypal gourmet restaurant, Checchino Dal 1887, for tonnarelli pasta lavished with thick oxtail sauce.

Friday Favourite: The BREW

What better way to prepare for the sunny Shanghai days than heading down to a craft brewery with its very own signature beers and spacious beer garden. Located on the first floor of the five-star Kerry Hotel Pudong, Shanghai, The BREW is a lively, contemporary bar with handcrafted beers and cider, as well as some favourite pub dishes, sports on display, and live music.

brew1

We took a trip to The BREW to try out a few of their popular dishes, and it’s only right that we washed it down with some of their home brewed beers created by the resident brewmaster.

Charcoal-Roasted Chicken Wings

brew2

It seemed only right that we started with the alcohol, but of course, nothing accompanies a drink better than a generous portion of chicken wings. Inspired by the tastes of Malaysia this decadent street snack is accompanied with hot dipping sauce making it the perfect match with a cold beer.

Salt & Pepper Squid

brew3

Continuing the trend of great bar snacks, the squid is deep-fried in a light batter before being seasoned with salt and pepper and served with a piquant chilli lime sauce. It was a generous portion with meaty bites of squid, and not too much on the seasoning. Enjoying it in the spring sun might just take you back to that Southeast Asian beach!

The BREW’s Brewery Burger

brew4

It would be criminal to not fill up on one of The BREW’s burgers, so we opted for The BREW’s Brewery Burger. At the heart is a hefty Australian Wagyu beef patty, which is topped with caramelised onions, bacon and a slice of cheddar. There was no preference on how we wanted it cooked but the meat was juicy and it did put a few other Shanghai burgers to shame.

The BREW has its name for a reason and we picked out two favourite beers (of the many) that we tried (and available through Sherpa’s), but it’s worth visiting to try out their full range of seasonal homebrewed beers.

brew5

Pils
Gold Medal Winner, Pilsner Category, 2012 Beerfest Asia

Silver Medal Winner, New Zealand International Brewers Award 2012

Brewed with precision and golden straw in colour with a grassy noble hop aroma combined with a toasted malt character, the Pils is very well attenuated. With a moderate alcohol volume (4.9%), it finishes long and dry with a little sweetness, a nice accompaniment to the spicier dishes.

Indian Pale Ale

Bronze Medal Winner, Indian Pale Ale Category, 2012 Beerfest Asia

A classic Pale Ale characterised by intense hop bitterness and moderate alcohol content (5.2%), typical of a classic English Ale, it was the favourite of ours. The deep shade of bronze comes from the flowery hop aromas of ripe stone fruit and is a good match with any one of their burgers or pizza.

The BREW is available for delivery through Sherpa’s
