A consumer recently complained on Sina’s Black Cat Complaint Platform that they found a cockroach inside a ¥68 package of grilled eel purchased at a Sam’s Club in Shanghai.
The consumer asked for compensation according to the Food Safety Regulations. The Customer Service of Sam’s Club responded that an issue like this had never occurred since they first opened their doors and that the entire cold-chain shipping of this product was the responsibility of the supplier. However, Sam’s Club was willing to take back the product and replace it after further discussion within the department.
This is not the first time that a thing like this has happened. Similar complaints have been found on Weibo, the biggest social media site in China.
On July 12th, 2020, Ms. Hu from Nanchang in Jiangxi Province found foreign matter in a beef roll purchased in a Sam’s Club in Hongjiaozhou after she had already eaten half of it.
There are even more incidents than this. Living snails have been found in chicken rolls, plastics in pork jerky, nails in mochi, and plastics in yogurt.
27 Sam’s Clubs,a high-end membership subsidy of Walmart, locations have opened across 20 cities in China with further expansion plans. As the company expands, food safety needs to be strengthened at the same time.
