A Japanese professor is working on revolutionising the way we ‘watch’ TV with a multi-sensory viewing experience.

The prototype has been dubbed Taste the TV (TTTV) and works by combining sprays from a carousel of ten canisters to imitate different food flavours, they spray or combination of sprays is then rolled out on a hygienic film across the flat screen TV for the viewer to taste.

The professor, Homei Miyashita from Meiji University, imagines a future in which flavours can be downloaded and enjoyed in a similar way to music.

“The goal is to make it possible for people to have the experience of something like eating at a restaurant on the other side of the world, even while staying at home,” he said.

It is estimated that the final product will cost in the region of 100,000 yen (about £650) making it an accessible product for families across the world.

Professor Miyashita suggested that the device could be used for distance learning for sommeliers and cooks or could be used by family and friends for tasting games and food quizzes in their own home.
