The biggest bell dubbed “Emmanuel” rang out from what remains of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. It marks one year since the massive blaze devastated one of the countries most iconic monuments.

With France under lockdown over the coronavirus outbreak, the reconstruction of the mediaeval cathedral has been halted. President Emmanuel Macron said the city was working hard to ensure that the building is restored within five years, despite the setback.

The bell rang out at 8:00pm, the hour French people gather at their windows and balconies to show their support for health workers on the frontline of the battle against COVID-19.

The 13-tonne bell is the cathedral’s oldest and biggest, installed in 1686 at the behest of King Louis XIV. Its chime has marked most major events in France since then, and was the only commemoration scheduled for the Notre-Dame fire’s anniversary.

The destruction of the cathedral has not been forgotten, despite our lives being dominated by the deadly coronavirus outbreak, which has claimed over 17,000 lives in France.
