Just in time for the Golden Week travel rush and the 70th birthday of the P.R.C., Beijing’s glamorous new Daxing International Airport is now open!
However, expats hoping to check it out during an international Golden Week flight will have to wait a little bit longer – customs and immigrations aren’t quite ready yet, but the airport will be connected with 112 international destinations by spring.
Nick named‘The Starfish’ by local Chinese media, the late architect Zaha Hadid and her Chinese partners created this stunning design. Not only is it beautiful on the outside, but the interior is also a masterpiece of futuristic style.
The interior is well-lit by 8,000 rooftop windows that allow the natural light to stream in. There’s even an awesome traditional Chinese-inspired courtyard complete with a koi pond in the international terminal for travelers to find a little peace and serenity during their trips.

The new airport gives a much-needed boost to the capital’s flight capacity as Beijing Capital International Airport is already the world’s second-busiest hub and is at full capacity, over 100 million travelers passed through in 2018!
Daxing aims to accommodate 72 million passengers by 2025 and over 100 million after that.
Even though Daxing is a located about 50km outside of Beijing, it’s a quick and easy trip into the city. Right now, passengers can ride the Daxing Airport Express line of the Beijing Subway to make it downtown.

As part of the grand plan, the airport will receive additional high-speed rail, intercity services, and subway lines. The airport will also connect to Xiong’An, Tongzhou, Yizhuang, Tianjin, Langfang, and more destinations.
We can’t wait to check it out in person! Have any of our readers been to Daxing already? Let us know in the comments below!
