The History of Tsingtao Beer

Everyone here has had or at least recognizes those iconic large green bottles of Tsingtao beer, right? They’re everywhere in China.

But how many of you know the history behind Tsingtao?

For starters – it was first brewed by homesick Germans in the port city of Qingdao in Shandong province. Tsingtao is the old written form of the Wade-Giles romanization system, used before pinyin become a thing.

The Germania-Brauerei company was established in 1903. Brewmaster R. Schuster combined traditional German brewing techniques with fresh spring water from nearby Laoshan to create an authentic German-style pilsener beer.

The first beer was ready in late 1904 and business took off. The good times only lasted a decade though. The Japanese army invaded Northeast China in 1914 and by 1916 Germania-Brauerei company was liquidated and sold to the Japanese Dai-Nippon brewery. Dai-Nippon later split into the Sapporo and Asahi breweries, both of which are still popular breweries in Japan to this day.

When the Japanese surrended to the Allied powers at the end of WWII, the  brewery was taken over by the Tsui family in the Nationalist government. This phase was also short-lived as the People’s Republic of China took control of the country (and the brewery) in 1949.

It remained a state-owned venture until the 1990s when economic reform helped turn the brewery into a corporation.

Now, thanks to China’s huge population, Tsingtao is the world’s second best-selling beer with 2.6% of the world’s total beer market. What’s the best-selling beer?

Snow.

While Snow doesn’t have a large overseas presence, Tsingtao is available in Chinese restaurants and beer stores in over 70 countries.

However, there are some Tsingtao varieties that we’ve only seen in China. Incidentally, they’re our top two favourite kinds of Tsingtao.

Tsingtao White Beer – a crisp and refreshing wheat beer…

…and Tsingtao Gold Label – a crisper, more flavourful, and slightly more boozy take.

After a fun tour, with free beer samples, you’ll be ready for a giant seafood feast. Something that the coastal town of Qingdao is reknowned for. Make sure to wash it down with a bag of Tsingtao Beer!

Thanks to the proximity of the brewery, many places in Qingdao offer unpasteurized bags of fresh beer to-go. You can sip on your brew-in-a-bag and take a stroll over to the Huilan pavilion, the blue and white logo featured on Tsingtao’s label!
