Kentucky Fried Vegetable? KFC China’s First Vegetarian Burger

Earlier this month KFC announced it’s new limited-edition ‘Cheese Thick Mushroom Vegetarian Burger’ (芝士厚菇素尊堡) via Weibo. So, if you’re vegetarian lacking fast-food options or just a food adventurer always on the search for new treats to tantalize your tastebuds then KFC (might) have you covered.

We’re yet to get a bite of this burger that encrusts a portobello mushroom with four kinds of cheese in KFC’s classic deep-fried signature batter. Layered with fresh tomato, lettuce and a squeeze of accompanying burger sauce it’s an alternative to the classic chicken burgers that’s so popular amongst the locals (not so much with the expats).

It’s got mixed reviews from netizens with one raving about it “to be really delicious!” “The fried batter is particularly crisp!…and I don’t feel too greasy after eating.” However, not everyone was a huge fan with one netizen claiming, “It’s an insult to burgers… the one I wanted was sold out early, so I had to eat the vegetarian burger… I will never eat a meatless burger in my life again.”
