Craving a beer? Or have a hankering for something sweet? For us lucky folk in China, we can quench our thirst with a ten kuai Tsingtao, or satisfy that sweet craving with a red bean bun using just the change down the back of the sofa. In other countries, things don’t come quite as cheap.

Take the UK for example. The average cost of a pint of beer comes in at £3.60 (31RMB), and you’ll do well to find a decent dessert for much less. With this in mind, one English pub has decided to offer customers an alternative way to pay. The New Inn, based in the north-east English town of Great Limber, has launched a Barter Board – a new payment method allowing customers to exchange home-grown fruit and veg for pudding and pints.

The rules are simple: any food offered up for a swap must be home-grown and grown in the county of Lincolnshire. The Barter Board rotates depending on what’s in season and is on display for all customers to see what their home-grown grub can get them. The amount of fruit or veg needed to redeem a pint or pudding isn’t stated – that’s where the bartering comes in – but staff know when they’re getting a good or bad deal, and will happily send customers back to their allotments to pick some more produce if they haven’t brought in enough.

General manager at The New Inn, Lewis Phillips, said: ‘The New Inn is situated in a great place for local produce and with so many farms nearby, we wanted to utilise this’. He adds, ‘we also have another board in our dining area which lets our guests know what we’ve used their produce for. Right now, we have rhubarb crumble on there.’

At Sherpa’s, we love a good deal too – so whilst our drivers won’t be accepting any of your fruit or veg, we can give you some great discounts instead! Tap the app or visit the website and check out what deals we’ve got on offer today.
