Say it Ain’t So: Bye Bye Fields

You’ve probably heard the news already: popular English-speaking online grocer Fields has officially shut down. Without much of a warning at all, the company released a WeChat statement last Friday announcing that they will immediately stop taking and delivering all orders.

Guess it’s pretty much impossible to cook at home anymore. Sounds like it’s time to order some Sherpa’s – kidding, er, not really.

Jokes aside, we’re definitely sad to hear that Fields has closed after 10 tasty years of operation. First opened by Chinese-American Steve Liang in 2009, Fields focused on food safety and provided convenient delivery and online payment options. It really was on the cutting edge before WeChat, Alipay, and the Kuaidi revolution arrived (although Sherpa’s beat them to delivery by a whole decade, woo!).

Apparently, Fields’ parent company, Sun Art Retail Group, made the decision to shut down the online grocer after looking at the ‘overall development strategy and business layout’ of their group. Whatever that means.

One former Fields’ employee has stated that the company wants ‘to explore a different direction.’ Again, whatever that means. We say don’t hold your breath for a return.

If you’d still like to get groceries delivered and, you know, do that whole cooking thing, you’ve still got some website and WeChat shop options. Depending on where you are Sherpa’s also offers delivery from some popular supermarkets.

With the demise of Fields, how are you going to get your groceries delivered? Or will you walk to the nearest grocery store like a normal person? Let us know in the comments below!
