1. Food, Inc. (2008)

Released in 2008, Food, Inc. is gut-wrenching and relevant even a decade later. The Oscar-nominated documentary examines the industrial production of meat in the US and investigates how corporate farming practices exploit the production chain. Food Inc. also features activist, author and journalist Michael Pollan whose bestseller The Omnivore’s Dilemma has paved way to revolutionizing theories about the way we eat.

2. BUGS (2016)

A team from Copenhagen-based Nordic Food Lab (an offshoot of Noma) is traveling the world to explore local food cultures and food systems – from foraging and farming to cooking and, of course, eating insects. BUGS follows the three young men as they explore the alternative food sources with communities in Europe, Australia, Mexico, Kenya, Japan and beyond. Thought-provoking, adventurous and comic for foodies and environmentalists alike!

3. Fed Up (2014)

more than honey

4. More than Honey (2012)

In More than Honey, Oscar-nominated director Markus Imhoof tackles the vexing issue of why bees, worldwide, are facing extinction. Visually magnificent, the Swiss documentary explains poignantly why we couldn’t survive without these little creatures. A quick answer: bees pollinate 70 of the around 100 crop species that feed 90% of the world.

red obsession

5. Red Obsession (2013)

Narrated by Russell Crowe, Red Obsession is an Australian documentary which centers on a chateaux in Bordeaux that struggles to accommodate China’s appetite for their rare, expensive wines. The film raises an interesting question – is there a place for fine wine in the dragon economy? Best enjoyed with a glass of red, preferably from France.

chef's table

6. Chef’s Table (2015)

A Netflix original, Chef’s Table is an American web series that profiles world-renowned chefs and how they achieved their success. The creator of this project, David Gelb, is also behind a critically acclaimed documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi.

just eat it

7. Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story (2014)

Would you quit grocery shopping and survive only on discarded food? Two filmmakers and food lovers, Jen and Grant, did exactly that for six months in Just Eat It. The 75-minute documentary dives into billions of dollars’ worth of edible food that is tossed into the trash every year by farmers, retailers and consumers. Informative and shocking – it’s not to be missed.
