After more than two years of use by basically everyone in the country, China’s ‘Communications Itinerary Card’, used to track residents’ travel histories, is being retired!
The tracing system was first deployed in 2020 to predict levels of COVID exposure. Earlier this year the tracking time was shortened from 14 to 7 days before being officially shut off at midnight on December 12, 2022.
The itinerary card was used to track if people had been in high-risk areas by tracing mobile phone signals. An official statement reads “All channels to get the itinerary card such as text messages, web pages, WeChat mini app, Alipay mini app and app will go offline at the same time.”
There will no longer be any texts and calls to go to quarantine or get tested based on location history! It’s another step towards normalcy, but remember to continue to take precautions and be aware of the current pandemic situation. While the omicron variant is much less deadly than prior versions of the virus, serious illness and death can still occur, especially in vulnerable populations. Let’s all do our best to get through this and emerge stronger than ever!
