Pinot Noir is grown across the world and has become the sixth most planted grape variety. It’s popular with consumers globally and is the single most grown red grape variety in Burgundy, France.

The name Pinot Noir is a vivid description of the appearance of the Pinot grape bunches. Pinot means pine cone in French, the bunches of Pinot Noir grapes are firm and resemble pine cones, while Noir means black.

Pinot Noir has a thinner skin and produces a lighter coloured wine with lower tannins and higher acidity. Wines made from Pinot Noir have typical aromas of red fruits (raspberries, strawberries, red cherries), often with forest floor notes after ageing. Ripe Pinot Noir will show aromas of black cherry, violet, and rose.
Pinot Noir is not easy to grow and prefers cooler climates, where grape ripening can be a big problem, and disasters such as frost are frequent. Pinot Noir is also particularly delicate and susceptible to disease and requires careful care to produce high-quality Pinot Noir grapes, which is a headache for wine growers.
