Shanghai couple spend ¥600,000 yearly to rescue stray cats

Here’s another heart-warming story for all you animal lovers out there. For anyone that owns a pet, whether it’s a gerbil, or a cat, or a dog (or all three!) It’s easy to get attached and make them part of the family.

Last year, the scale of China’s urban pet market exceeded ¥200 billion, a year-on-year increase of 20%, of which 60% was through e-commerce channels. But for a lot of new pet owners, it’s not always quite what they expected and they realize the great responsibility that comes with owning a pet, which sadly means thousands of once pets are left to fend for themselves as strays.

Well, a couple in Shanghai have spent as much as ¥600,000 on helping stray cats every year and turned their charitable work into a career and opened an online shop to design products like tree hole cat litters to help stray cats survive and live a better life.

His name is Prince. He is 13 years old. He is the first cat adopted by Suki.

Suki: “Actually, I used to be very afraid of cats,  so I mainly kept dogs. However, [Prince] changed my attitude towards cats, so I always tell everyone that he is my favorite.”

Suki: “He used to be very ugly. He had basically no hair on his body, and there were a lot of cat moss on his face.”

Suki: “The first Golden Retriever dog was a birthday gift from my husband. I feel that starting with the Golden Retriever, gave me a better understanding of dogs, and then we started to help stray animals.”

Xiao Tachibana is the youngest cat in the family, he was rescued by Suki and her colleagues on the highway.

Suki: “When we rescued him, he was wearing a collar, so it must have been raised by someone. We drove three cars front and back. We tried to keep no cars behind and in front of us to keep a long distance between cars so we could rescue him. He grew up with us afterwards, we originally wanted to help him find adoption, but he is too cute, so we haven’t published the adoption information for a long time.”

This is Miumiu, who lost an eye and ear

Suki: “When I adopted her, I still felt that she was very dear and well-behaved, and she liked people very much, and then she didn’t suffer much trauma and influence. So far, she still has nothing to worry about apart from maybe eating too much and getting fat!”

Suki: “Sometimes cats may be abandoned because there is a lack of understanding and synergy between humans and cats. Product design like mine may help a kind of interaction and getting along between animals and humans.”

Suki: “In fact, we think there are many ways to help animals. One way is to help stray animals. The other one, if we solve this problem fundamentally, I think a better way is to help people and animals live more harmoniously together.”
