The new COVID-19 outbreak situation in Beijing is continuing to develop. As authorities contact trace people who have visited Xinfadi market or have had contact with those who have been to the market, it’s very likely that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases will increase. These five areas have now been designated as ‘medium’ risk zones as of June 17th to help combat the spread.

Six groups of people will be tested in the following days: those with links to Xinfadi, those with links to other food markets, medical workers, teachers, public sector employees, and students who had already returned to school. Gao Fu, director of the China CDC, has stated that the outbreak probably began quietly spreading in May. A dish washer in a hotel in Tianjin, who had not traveled to Beijing, was also confirmed as having caught the COVID-19.

More than 1,200 inbound and outbound flights from Beijing’s two airports were cancelled on Wednesday and public spaces including parks, art galleries, museums, and libraries are limited to 30% capacity.
