Friday Favourite: Pomelo Thai

A sudden change into warm weather got us in a slightly exotic mood, so we decided to head down to the popular Pomelo Thai near at the Shanghai Centre in between Jing’an Temple and West Nanjing Road.

Pomelo Thai is a casual eatery that brings customers authentic tastes from the Kingdom of Smiles. The decor creates a relaxed atmosphere with comfortable, colourful surroundings, and a quick look at their menu makes things just a little more comfortable with their affordable prices. We couldn’t wait to tuck in and see how these dishes compared to some of the other Thai spots in Shanghai.

Spring Rolls

We would’ve not been happy with ourselves if we came without trying their homemade spring rolls, so it was the first ordered and the first to arrive. The skin is crispy and delicate just as you’d expect with a vegetarian filling of bean curd, vermicelli, carrot, onion and cabbage, sounds a healthy start to the meal, right? Served with a sweet chilli sauce and coming in at only 18RMB it’s well worth it.

Pad Thai

Have you ever eaten Thai food without even ordering Pad Thai? Well then shame on you! We’ve tried a lot of Pad Thai’s in Shanghai, and sometimes they can overdo it on the sweetness, but Pomelo Thai managed to get the balance just right, and it’s generous on the shrimps with a satisfying portion of rice noodles stir-fried with smoked tofu, beansprouts and egg.

Yellow Beef Curry

pomelo4

Perhaps not the most popular choice when it comes to Thai curries, the Thai Yellow Beef Curry is a mild creamy curry cooked with broccoli, tomatoes and potatoes making it a hearty addition to the meal. It makes a pleasant change from the usual green or red curry we always order, if you’re not big on spice but love a good curry then this one is for you, also available with chicken.

Hainan Chicken Rice Set

pomelo5

Not a classic Thai dish but as the newest addition to their menu, we put in an order for the Hainan Chicken Rice Set and were not disappointed. The Hainan style chicken was cooked tenderly and accompanied by three dips, served with chicken rice and a bowl of chicken soup. It’s a perfect filling meal for any season.
